a special something from a little over a year ago...

just because... (it's my blog!)

This is truly one of the most memorable songs from last year, for me personally. I remember playing this song in my car on Sept 18. I was stuck in afternoon traffic on I-93N, just trying to be where I wanted to be, and be there on time. I am glad I played this song that afternoon because it didn't matter whether I made it on time to say what I wanted to say when I know that I have done more than what I can to make him feel it. And just as some times some songs offer catharsis, or invoke absolution, I know that's not why I was playing this song that afternoon. I just thought this song will always be beautiful and "for a million years" will stay relevant to me.

To my Dad, who I miss so much.

BURN LIST FEB 2010 - Floorfillers

Party People!!!!! Tag Team back again and so are a few all-time floorfillers in this February set, side-by-side with hot new releases kicking to the same beat. Hi Energy (covered here by Lite Frequency) killed disco for good and helped give rise to the Chicago Hi NRG sound that characterize House as we know it. Physical (heavy sample from the Bingo Players' track, Body Talk) is the 80's longest-running single at the top spot of Billboard (yup, a dance track did it!), along with the magazine's ranking as The Sexiest Song of All Time. Whoomp! (There It Is) is easily the most prominent 90's dance song (possible the best feel-good song of all-time) currently charting to the top spot of Beatport with a Doodge & Viper rehash. And as Eurodance dominated the past decade, no other song speaks Eurodance like Everytime We Touch, whether its the Cascada original or the real summer-y rehash from Crew and Men of Honor appearing on this set. This decade seems posed to be the decade when rap music really crosses over to high energy club, whether as is, with Grime (Wiley, Dizzie Rascal) and Crunk (Li'l Wayne and Timbaland, appearing on this set with Carry Out), or as dance reproductions or collaboration among gangsta rap acts (Pitbull, Kid Cudi) and club artists (David Guetta's One Love album is rife with these sounds, and then there's Boris reproducing Pitbull. Who would have thunk, but Boris and Pitbull in Take You There kicks club ass!).

It's the longest stretch of circuit-less freeze here in the US East Coast. But in many other cities across the world, the hottest parties are about to get kicking. So listen, download and fix your legwarmers. Burn List Feb 2010 - Floorfillers is gonna shake your derriere.

BURN LIST JAN 2010: ELECTRONIC DOWNTEMPO

ELECTRONIC DOWNTEMPO 2010

A selection of some of the newer chill-out tracks from The Killers, M.I.A., Lily Allen and other border-breaking artists with immense edge and musicality: Paloma Faith from the UK (sex= female; age= 24; style=edgy; hair=cooky; voice= fierce and raspy; The Next Hottest UK Diva= checked); Mika whose sophomore effort strengthens Israel's crop on the prolific-artists-tip in today's dance music (all the Freddie Mercury-comparisons are not without merit!).

Also thrown in the mix are a few male artists sparking sensation in the O.U.S.(Outside United States) - both aurally and visually! - like the 27-year old Belgian crooner Milow, whose songs defy genres and beats-per-minute; and the 32-year old Argentinian-born Swedish Jose Gonzalez who tags in folk, acoustic AND dance categories. With their respective tracks, You Don't Know, and Killing for Love, an illustration to the stretch of the dance genre style that is electronic downtempo is obvious. And along with Scottish-band Looper's fun cut titled Mondo '77, an attempt to describe the experimental and alternative nature of this musical style is showcased. These three tracks, quite admittedly, are not "fresh and new from astudnameddisco" - these were actually European chart-toppers from at least 5 years ago! Such is the forward-looking sound of chill-lounge-downtempo music. Dance music doesn't have to necessarily rate bpm's in the order of hundreds (or read as if the lyrics were written de-void of all sentiments!) in order to be regarded as someone's or everyone's dance music. That's what Burn List Jan 2010 tries to bring. Electronic Downtempo.
